On a wild and windy Thursday night in between February storms Dennis and Jorge, some brave and brilliant Compton Club members and staff gathered at Wessex Raceway, our local indoor karting track, for the inaugural Compton Karting Calamity Cup.
Teams of two or three were drawn out of a hat and after the ‘rules of the track’ safety briefing, everyone was jumpsuited and helmeted and ready for the Qualifying Session.
Each team member drove for about 5 minutes to get a feel for the karts and the fastest single lap time per team decided where each team lined up on the starting grid.
Richard O’Dell (a current PPL student) proved his early mettle by grabbing pole position which only made everyone else more competitive as he did it in such a laid back, easy manner!
Then the real race began – 60 minutes of adrenaline-fuelled karting and pit stop strategies which saw a fierce battle fought out on the track. There were spins, bumps and (only) one black flag by the finish with no injuries, so a great result and a great time.
The podium was:
1st Place – Team 10 – Richard O’Dell and Doug Derrick
2nd Place – Team 11 – Jim Bulman and Dominic Berry
3rd Place – Team 7 – Simon Cassey, Clive Hughes & Keely Beresford
Fastest lap of the track – Harry Miller
A very big thank you to: John G, Shaun, Logan, Shaun D, Raymond, Kesia, Patrick, Nigel, Lauren, Graham N, Helen, Julian, Graham B, Colin, John M, Chas, Ken, Tim, Clive, Simon, Harry, Laura, John D, Mark, Dave, Kieran, Richard, Doug, Jim, Dominic, Steve, Peter and Becca for making it such a terrific evening and a such a close-run competition.
